Penn State Announces Discovery Day Program

The
DISCOVERY DAY program is being offered by the Penn State Schuylkill campus during the months of Oct., Nov. & Dec. on Saturdays on the campus from 9 AM until noon. The programs are free of charge, with Penn State faculty providing the instruction. Due to the nature of some of the programs enrollment is limited. Discovery Days - Fall 2006
Build A Computer (10/14/06): An Engineering Professor (Tom Cleary) and an Informational Sciences & Technology faculty member (Dr. Elinor Madigan) will lead a workshop for 18 students in which the students will learn about building a computer in the classroom. (for high school students)
Use Your Brain (10/21/06): Dr. Leah Ann Fetsko will have students do something with brain anatomy and have them dissect sheep brains and perhaps compare the brains of other animals to the human brain. "I already have human brains in the lab. It would be nice for them to do this and to learn about different parts of the brain and what they do." (for 18 high school students)
The Nose Always Knows (10/28/06) : Dr. Leah Ann Fetsko will have students investigate the sense of smell, how adaptation to odors occurs, what part of the brain you use to sense smell, and why those who are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease often begin the course of the disease with disorders of olfaction. " I have them do some scent identification and adaptation experiment as part of a larger lab on the senses, and they always have a ball with that lab." (for 24 high school students)
What Are You Made Of (11/04/06): Dr. Darcy Medica will have students examine DNA, cells and tissues in the biology laboratory so they learn about what makes up the human body. (for 12 middle school students)
Animated Computer Graphics for Girls (11/04/06): Dr. Elinor Madigan will run a workshop in the computer laboratory that will teach students how to do computer animated graphics. (for 24 high school students)
Animated Computer Graphics for Boys (11/04/06): Professor Jeff Stone will run a workshop in the computer laboratory that will teach students how to do computer animated graphics. (for 24 high school students)
Waves: Light & Sound (11/11/06): Dr. Mike Gallis will demonstrate in the physics laboratory the behavior & properties of light & sound waves. Students will get to do some hands-on experiments with light & sound waves. (for 18 high school students)
Criminal Investigation - Forensics (11/18/06) : Dr. Hakan Can will talk about forensic investigations & will have students using fingerprinting kits, drug-testing kits, etc. (for 24 high school students)
Biological & Chemical Aspects of Crime Scene Investigation (12/02/06) : Three biology professors Fetsko, Medica & Schorschinsky) will set-up a hypothetical crime scene & have students use biological & chemical means to determine "who done it. " (for 24 high school students)
Managing and Marketing a Small Business (12/09/06): Professor Dave Norris will lead students in the "ins and outs" of starting up a small business of their own. (for 24 high school students)
