Choirs from six Penn State campuses will “Raise the Song!” in a free public concert Oct. 28 at the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts in Harrisburg.

The landmark event for the University and Penn State Harrisburg will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Sunoco Performance Theater. Tickets and information are available by calling 717-948-6470.

Hosted by Penn State Harrisburg and its School of Humanities, the performance will feature Penn State choirs from University locations at Harrisburg, Altoona, Berks, Schuylkill, University Park and Erie. Master of Ceremonies will be Anthony Leach, Penn State’s 2009-10 laureate, associate professor of music and music education in the College of Arts and Architecture, and director of Penn State’s “Essence of Joy” choir.

The performing arts partnership is a first for both the University and Penn State Harrisburg.

“This will be the first event of its kind in the history of the University and our college," said O. David Deitz, director of Penn State Harrisburg’s choir and the driving force behind the multi-campus participation in the concert. "It is all part of an effort to entertain, display the high level of talent at our locations and promote Penn State’s performing arts programs and opportunities.”

Deitz said each participating student organization will perform individually for 10 to 15 minutes with all choirs joining together at the conclusion of the event to sing Mendelssohn’s "Verleih uns Frieden" (Grant us Peace) and the Penn State Alma Mater, from which the “Raise the Song!” concert title is derived.

In a related outreach effort the morning of Oct. 28, student choral groups and their instructors from five area high schools will attend a workshop with Deitz and University Park concert choir director Lynn Drafall.

The 10 a.m. to noon workshop will include groups from Hershey, Central Dauphin East, Lower Dauphin, Cedar Cliff, Middletown, and Palmyra high schools in the Capital Union Building on the Penn State Harrisburg campus. The sessions will be open to the public.

On Tuesday, September 23rd, Penn State President Graham B. Spanier, along with Chancellor R. Keith Hillkirk and SGA President Jarret Robinson served students, faculty, staff, administration and guests of the campus, cake and ice cream on the campus green. The celebration was held as a kickoff of a years' worth of activites that have been planned in honor of the campus' 75th anniversary.

The ice cream that Dr. Spanier helped to dish out was created in honor of the anniversary - Schuylkill Swirl Ice Cream, vanilla ice cream with blueberry swirl and chocolate chips, by the Penn State Creamery. As each campus celebrates an anniversary, a special anniversary ice cream blend is made in the campus' honor.
University Park, Pa. — Students who expected to receive a Pennsylvania state grant administered through the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) will have their Penn State fall semester tuition bills credited for the estimated grant amount.

PHEAA normally issues grants in August, but is dependent on an authorized state appropriation to do so. With no comprehensive state budget to date and the fall semester rapidly approaching, it seems less and less likely that those funds will be available for the start of the academic year.

Last year, nearly 18,000 Penn State students received state grants for an average award of about $2,900. The University expects to advance more than $25 million to students in the form of a credit on the fall semester tuition bill for their state grants.

"This is already a difficult time financially for many of our students and their families," said Anna Griswold, assistant vice president for undergraduate education and executive director of student aid. "It is imperative that the University do whatever is possible to help our students. The logical option is to credit their bills while Penn State waits to receive the disbursements, so that no action is required on the student's part."

Although amounts have not yet been finalized, the maximum state grant award to students for the fall is expected to be $1,885.

The University will rely on the most recent data available from PHEAA for estimates of eligible students and award amounts. Since final data will not be available until a state budget is passed, final awards and eligibility may differ from the estimated amount, in which case tuition bills may be adjusted accordingly for the spring semester.

After the state budget is approved, eligible students will be notified by PHEAA via e-mail about the final amount of their state grant award. In the meantime, other state-related institutions, such as the University of Pittsburgh and Temple University, are following similar action to assist their students this fall while they also wait for the state aid to arrive.

University reserves will be used to cover the grant amounts. The state budget impasse has had multiple effects on institutions such as Penn State, including the lack of available appropriations, uncertain appropriation amounts for 2009-10 and the loss of income from using funds that would otherwise be gaining interest.

Penn State Outreach has announced that Michael R. Gallis, assistant professor of physics has been selected as faculty lead of the Physics Asset Project.

The project centers around the development of curricular materials based on Gallis' animations for high school and introductory college level physic courses and disseminating these materials via the world wide web. The emphasis will be on addressing state and national standards.

Michael Gallis, Penn State Schuylkill Campus, has created over 200 animations for his courses at the undergraduate level. They can be seen at the project main page at http:phys23p.sl.psu.edu/phys_anim/Phys_anim.htm and a searchable index is available at http://phys23p.sl.psu.edu/CWIS/index.php.

The animation project also has its own YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/mrg3.

Penn State Public Broadcasting (PSPB), will work with Gallis, a focus group of physics and Earth space high school teachers and professionals at WGBH's Teachers' Domain to transform these animations into high school ready content. Some of the materials will be recast for teachers to include in presentation software such as Power Point, Blackboard and WebCT. Other materials will be redisigned to be manipulated by students, allowing them to change various parameters to see the effects.

WGBH's Teachers' Domain is a nationally distributed digital library that has registered users in 64 percent of K-12 public schools in America and 176 countries around the world. PSPB has a partnership through Teachers' Domain called Keystone eMedia. Through this localized site, PSPB helps ensure that all materials meet Pennsylvania state academic standards as well as national science standards. PSPB's Keystone eMedia can be viewed at the following site; http://www.wpsu.org/education/development/emedia.html.

Religious and Philosophical Forum Presents "Is Anybody Listening"

On Friday, April 24, 2009 at 12 noon in the R. Michael Fryer Conference Center, the Religious and Philosophical Forum will present This month's forum is entitled: "Is Anyone Listening? The Strained Voice(s) of the Church in Today's Culture" and it will be presented by Dr. Kenneth H. Miller, Professor of Christian Theology at Evangelical Theological Seminary in Myerstown, PA.

Dr Kenneth Miller is a graduate of Penn State University (BA), Evangelical School of Theology (MDiv) and Trinity International University (PhD). He has served as pastor of congregations in Dauphin and York counties and in Highland Park, Ill. He began teaching at Evangelical in 1993. Ken served as Academic dean from 2002-2005. Thereafter, he decided to return to fulltime teaching. In the spring of 2007 he taught at the Evangelical College of Theology in Manipur, India.

Ken has continued to be involved in pastoral ministry, serving at six different churches over the past nine years. In addition to his being very actively involved in community activities in and around Myerstown, he has authored articles in "The Evangelical Journal" and is currently working on a survey of doctrines for the Evangelical Congregation Church. His current scholarly interest is the church in contemporary culture.

In his lecture on April 24, Dr Miller will address the challenges of the Christian church in Postmodernity and beyond by considering some of the issues that confront leaders both within and outside the Christian church. These include the nature of truth, the essence of faith, the confusions of contemporary culture and the challenges of a world in crisis. This lecture will outline these topics from the perspective of the historic Christian faith and it will raise questions on how that faith must constantly critique its own captivation by cultural trends.

This final presentation provides a close to this academic year's theme, "Religion Today: Faith in the Twenty First Century." It also provides one more opportunity to reflect upon intellectual contexts and contemporary issues in their intersection with religious faith.

Please attend this final lecture in a remarkable series and bring a friend to what will be a very informative presentation. As always, there will be ample time for questions and discussion and lunch will be provided

The second in a series of videos leading up to the 2009 Penn State Symposium on Teaching and Learning with Technology, which will be held on April18th, 2009, was recently released on the Symposium Web site. The video features Dr. Elinor Madigan, assistant professor of Information Sciences and Technology, and two of her students, Gabriel Marrero and Eugene Bound.

Dr. Madigan is re-defining learning spaces through a class project she calls the Google Earth project. The purpose of the project is to get her students engaged with each other and the campus community through the use of technologies such as Google Earth and the Digital Commons Last year, Dr. Madigan did some work with the Digital Commons and decided to do the same this year but on a larger scale. Using Google Earth to start, students in groups choose a building at the Penn State Schuylkill campus, then complete a set of multimedia assignments (this is where the Digital Commons comes in).Working in teams, student complete a set of multimedia assignments to create a well-rounded tour of the Penn State Schuylkill campus. The finished product is made available on the Web for the benefit incoming students.

The end result is a well-rounded tour of the Penn State Schuylkill campus. But, the students and Madigan have also found that this has changed their view of learning and their environment. View the video as shown on the symposium web site and see Madigan and two students, Gabriel Marrero and Eugene Bound, share this very unique learning experience.

To see the finished project go to: http://sl-lamp.sl.psu.edu/SLCampus/. NOTE: You will need Google Earth installed on your PC to be able to view the student's Google Earth project. To download Google Earth go to http://earth.google.com/

The Religious and Philosophical Forum will host its second presentation for this semester on Friday, March 27 at noon in the R. Michael Fryer Conference Center on the Schuylkill Campus of the Pennsylvania State University. It is entitled, "Islam and the Environment" and it will be presented by Ms Rubina Tareen, Director of the Outreach Program, Islamic Society of Schuylkill County.

Ms Tareen has wrote the following concerning her upcoming presentation:

Many have the idea of Mohammad (Peace be upon him) as a prophet of Islam, a statesman, a military leader, a ruler, a teacher and much more. But what may strike some as strange is that he was also an environmentalist--one of the greatest environmentalists that has ever lived. My speech will be based on two sources: the Holy Qur'an and the Hadith (sayings of the prophets), showing the Islamic views on stewardship and its importance.

Rubina Khan Tareen is currently a student at Zaytuna Islamic Seminary studying Sharia (Islamic Jurisprudence). She is also the founder and the President of Bayaan Inc. and the Director of the Outreach (interfaith) Program of the Islamic Society of Schuylkill County. Ms Tareen is on the board of the Interfaith health network. As an event coordinator for Zaytuna Institute, she has successfully organized many Islamic conferences and retreats in the Northeast.

Bayaan Inc. is an online Islamic and comparative religion bookstore. The website address is: http://www.bayaanincnet/

This lecture continues the Religious and Philosophical Forum theme of the academic year: "Religion Today: Faith in the Twenty First Century." This specific lecture also continues the specific theme of the intersect of religion and concern for the environment, which Pastor Karl Jones brought up last month in relation to Christianity.

Please try to attend and bring a friend to what will be a very informative presentation in what has turned out to be an extraordinary series. As always, there will be ample time for questions and discussion and lunch will be provided.

Thanks to a grant from the Sustainable Energy Fund in Allentown, Pa, Penn State Schuylkill will soon be generating green energy. The campus was recently notified that it will be receiving a $15,000 grant to install a photo-voltaic solar array on campus, which is expected to generate up to 3 kW of electricity.

The grant is the result of the foundation’s Summer Scholars Program, which was held this summer at Dickinson College in Carlilse, PA. Faculty members Mike Gallis and Tom Cleary, and electrician Mike Russell attended the week-long program which provided training on PV systems.

Following the training program, the campus was eligible to submit a proposal for one of 12 competitive grants to install a PV array on campus, to be used as an educational tool, as well as to generate green, renewable energy. The grant requires a project team to oversee the system installation and monitor performance.
