Spring 2010 Commencement Speaker Announced
Born in Lima, Peru, Amilcar Arroyo holds a degree in Business Administration from Garcilaso De La Vega University in Lima. He spent 16 years working in the banking industry in Peru prior to relocating to Miami, Florida, and then moving to Hazleton, Pennsylvania in 1989. He worked in farming and the textile industry and then for Quebecor World Printing for seven years. In 2004 he began the monthly Hispanic newspaper, El Mensajero, in Hazleton and then expanded to serve communities throughout northeastern Pennsylvania. In 2007 he sold the newspaper to Wilkes-Barre Publishing Co. and became Editor of the monthly publication. He has also worked in both television and radio. He was the host of the talk show, “Window on the Region,” on Channel 13 in Hazleton, as well as “La Noche del Sabor Latino” for radio station WAZL 1490 AM in Hazleton. In 2004 he began the Scranton newscast, “For Your Information.” He is a member of the Board of Directors of several organizations including, amongst others, Step by Step in Wilkes Barre, Kings College, CYC in Wilkes Barre, United Way of Hazleton, and the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce where he serves as Chair of the Diversity Committee. He is the President of Lingua Institute of Language and Multicultural in Hazleton. He enjoys doing translations for different organizations and providing advice to Hazleton newcomers. Mr. Arroyo and his wife, Cathy Hildebrand, have two daughters, Joleen Kelly and Kellie Marie. He also has a son, Giancarlo, who lives in Peru. For the past 19 years, he has been a member of Faith United Church of Christ.
