Miners Bank recently donated a stained-glass dome valued at $25,000 to Penn State Schuylkill. The dome, separated into nine sections with a corresponding metal frame, was removed from the ceiling of the Miners Bank Tremont Branch. The Tremont Branch was built in 1910 and the dome was part of its original construction. For several years, the dome -- comprised of leaded stained glass and 9 feet in diameter -- was covered and hidden from view.

"We are very pleased to donate the dome to Penn State and we hope it will be enjoyed for many years to come," said George H. Groves, president/CEO of Miners Bank.

Stephen R. Couch, interim chancellor of Penn State Schuylkill said, "I am delighted that Miner's Bank has given Penn State Schuylkill this beautiful historic glass dome. We greatly appreciate their generosity and look forward to finding a prominent place to display the dome on our campus."

Currently discussions are under way to find a permanent location for the dome on campus.

always wanted to go to school near my hometown of Pine Grove, and fortunately
PSU Schuylkill offered the degree I wanted. It is only 10 or so miles from my
house, and I liked the fact that it’s a rural school. Their Administration of
Justice program is also probably one of the best in the state. The professors
who teach the program are very good at their jobs, and they were always there
to help out if anyone needed guidance.”

What has my experience been like at
Penn State Schuylkill?

“In
transitioning from military life to college, I had to adjust to the more ‘laid back’
atmosphere. The level of discipline in the military is much different than the
college experience. I’ve made some close friends at Penn State Schuylkill; among
them not just students but faculty as well. It’s been very rewarding. I’ve
gathered a vast amount of knowledge on the criminal justice system, and had the
privilege to learn from some of the best professors Penn State has to offer.
There are plenty of faculty who are always there to provide a helping hand.”

“Penn
State Schuylkill was very supportive when I needed to take four semesters off
during my deployment to Iraq during 2009 through early 2010. This did have a
big impact on my studies. A lot of the friends I had made during my first two
years graduated while I was gone. When I came back I was the new ‘old guy’ and
I had to make friends with the new students. It also was tough getting back
into the ‘school mode’ after being overseas for so long, and out of school.”

Why did I decide to join the military?

“I
joined the military because of a strong sense of patriotism and desire to serve
my country. I’ve always had the utmost respect for those who wear the uniform,
and it would be the greatest honor…to wear it standing beside them. My greatest
accomplishment while serving in the military was graduating from advanced
individual training as a 19 Delta Cavalry Scout in Fort Knox, KY. This school
was both physically and mentally demanding, especially as a young eighteen year
old adult. Graduation day was one of the proudest days of my life.”

How was the Veterans benefits process

“I
found Penn State Schuylkill to be very supportive through the Veterans benefits
process. The Veteran’s representative on campus sent out all of the necessary
paperwork every semester. All I had to do was fill out the paperwork and send
it back to the Veteran’s representative, overall it was a very simple process.”

What are my career goals for the
future?

“With
my Bachelor of Science in Administration of Justice degree, I’m looking for a
position in law enforcement or I may try for a commission in the Army through
the Officer’s Candidate School. My four year degree will make that option very
possible.”

Campus, borough police continue to seek information about assault

Penn State Schuylkill Police and the Schuylkill Haven Police Department continue to investigate an assault that took place shortly before 9 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4, in an off-campus apartment on Dock Street in Schuylkill Haven, Pa. Police are seeking any and all information related to the assault, in which three victims, all Schuylkill campus students, were injured.

Penn State Schuylkill Interim Chancellor Stephen Couch asked the campus community to be vigilant and said campus police will work in cooperation with Schuylkill Haven police to identify and arrest the assailants. The chancellor urged anyone with information to come forward and said that police have reported these were targeted acts of violence, in which the assailants knew the victims.

“I share the deep concern expressed by many of you in the Penn State Schuylkill and Schuylkill Haven community about the violence perpetrated on our students this weekend, and about the violence that has occurred in our community in recent weeks,” Couch said. “The safety of our community is of paramount importance, and I ask that everyone monitor their surroundings and report any suspicious activities to the police.”

Anyone who has information about Sunday’s assault should contact Penn State Schuylkill Police at 570-385-6144, or the Schuylkill Haven Police Department at 570-385-9111.

Schuylkill campus has taken several steps to ensure violence does not continue through the final two weeks of the fall semester:

-- University Police patrols of campus residence halls have been increased during nighttime hours.

-- Additional police from Penn State’s Berks campus will be added to the Schuylkill campus force for an increased presence on the patrols.

-- Many scheduled student events have been postponed until the spring semester of 2012.

-- Students must vacate housing within 24 hours of their last exam.

-- The Penn State Schuylkill Office of Student Conduct, in an ongoing effort, continues to implement sanctions against the students involved.

Couch said he will lead efforts in the coming days, weeks and months to strengthen the conversation about nonviolence and mutual respect, both on campus and in the Schuylkill Haven community. The chancellor said he has decided to accelerate the initial timeframe for creation of the committee, as well as the delivery of their recommendations. Couch said he would now like to see an initial report no later than Feb. 1, and he will share their report with the campus and the wider community at that time.

“The committee will be charged with recommending actions that will improve the climate on campus and between the campus and the Schuylkill Haven community,” Couch said. “I am determined to take the necessary steps to get to the root of the violence and incivility that plague some parts of our campus community.”

On Wednesday, Dec. 7, senior campus administrators attended a meeting of the Schuylkill Haven Borough Council to address the violent nature of events taking place on Dec. 4. Attending the meeting along with Couch were Tammie Durham, director of Enrollment Services; Matthew Swatchick, director of Student Affairs; and Pamela Black, director of Academic Affairs. The campus administrators responded to the concerns of several community members in attendance.

Students, faculty and staff members who have been affected by recent events are encouraged to reach out to Campus Counseling at 570-385-6127, or visit http://www.sl.psu.edu/StudentServices/counseling.htm for more information. Campus Counseling’s services are strictly confidential.

Police urge campus community members to remember to walk on well-lit paths, walk in groups and report suspicious behavior or individuals immediately to police at 570-385-6144 or 911.

The Penn State Schuylkill Campus Honors Program provides highly
motivated students with an opportunity to broaden and enrich their
general education and to enhance their preparation for graduate school
or a career. To become a member of the program, the student undergoes a
rigorous screening and application process. Honors students have the
highest placement scores in math and English and SAT verbal and math
test of their incoming cohort. Application into the program is reviewed
by the faculty honors program coordinator, Anita Vickers.

Penn State Schuylkill Honors students are, as a whole, intellectually
curious and self-motivated individuals. The honors program offers them
the opportunity to receive more individualized instruction from their
professors and to experience a more in-depth application and an
independent pursuit of knowledge. Honors classes offer students a
stimulating, rigorous and rewarding learning environment.

This fall, honors program students are taking classes titled
Pennsylvania History; Physics: Electricity and Magnetism; Ancient
Philosophy; American History from 1877; Introductory Sociology; Western

Penn State Schuylkill students raised $8,400 recently in a series of
canning events in Schuylkill County as part of the The Penn State
IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, affectionately referred to as THON. The
students collected funds at Boyer's Markets locations in Schuylkill
Haven and Orwigsburg, Pa., and at Palermo's restaurant in Minersville,
Pa. The funds will go to the Four Diamonds Fund, which offers financial
and emotional support to pediatric cancer patients and their families,
and also funds cancer research.

Since THON began in 1973, Penn State students from across the
commonwealth have combined to raise more than $78 million for the Four
Diamonds Fund. THON now is known as the largest student-run philanthropy
in the world.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- An application available starting Tuesday (Sept. 27) through eLion gives Penn State students at all campuses the opportunity to compare their non-class schedule conflicts with open courses to make scheduling classes easier.

Schedule Planner, an online application, aligns a student's intended courses with self-identified event conflicts -- such as a recurring work schedule, meetings, rehearsals and practice times -- and reports back open class sections that work around those conflicts.

"We view Schedule Planner as a secure way for students to use technology to make course registration an easier process," Karen Schultz, University registrar, said. "We believe the service will give students the ability to tailor their course options to the demands of their daily and weekly extracurricular activities."

At any time, even prior to open registration dates, students can log in to eLion and select the Schedule Planner link, which redirects them to the Schedule Planner website. There they list all known blocks of time that they are unavailable for classes along with the courses they wish to take for an upcoming semester. Schedule Planner returns all open class sections that fit open blocks of time. Students then return to eLion, and enter their preferred sections from Schedule Planner's personalized results to complete course registrations.

The registrar's office will send Schedule Planner hourly updates regarding section space availability. Additional features of Schedule Planner allow students to save their listed schedule conflicts for future use and offer the ability to lock in a particular section of a desired course.

Schedule Planner is available through the eLion website.

Heavy rain and wind from Hurricane Irene are expected to impact southeastern portions of Pennsylvania from the afternoon on Saturday, Aug. 27 through the evening of Sunday, Aug. 28. The National Weather Service has issued a hurricane warning for Pennsylvania’s Philadelphia and Delaware counties, and a tropical storm warning for Bucks, Montgomery and Chester counties. A flood watch is in effect in those locations, as well as in Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe and Northampton counties. It is expected that the area may see record-setting amounts of rainfall, and there is potential for damaging wind.

While many campus locations likely will not feel the effects of the storm, the areas surrounding Penn State’s Abington, Brandywine, Great Valley, Schuylkill, Berks, Lehigh Valley, Hazleton, Wilkes-Barre and Worthington Scranton campuses likely will be affected. Residents in those areas should keep a close eye on weather reports and should prepare accordingly. To stay abreast of the latest warnings and watches for southeastern Pennsylvania, visit http://www.erh.noaa.gov/er/phi/ online. For a map of Penn State campuses and the storm’s projected impact on each, visit http://live.psu.edu/image/6082790968 online.

The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) is urging residents across the commonwealth to prepare for the storm. In the event that roadways become impassable or power is lost, PEMA advises residents to be prepared to survive on their own without outside assistance for at least three days; emergency crews will not be able to reach everyone immediately after the storm has passed.

Residents should keep the following on-hand:

-- Flashlights and extra batteries;
-- Portable, battery-operated radio and extra batteries;
-- First aid kit and manual;
-- Emergency food and water;
-- Non-electric can opener;
-- Essential medicines/prescriptions;
-- Cash, credit cards and important legal documents; and
-- Sturdy shoes.

If residents are ordered to evacuate they should do so without hesitating and should take important papers with them, including:

-- Checkbooks;
-- Driver's license;
-- Credit card information;
-- Birth certificates;
-- Social Security cards; and
-- Other forms and documents proving ownership/identity.

For more information from PEMA, download a PDF containing the entire announcement at http://goo.gl/WBv4q online.

For information about preparing for a hurricane, visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s website, at
http://www.fema.gov/hazard/hurricane/ online; information about preparing for flooding can be found at http://www.fema.gov/hazard/flood/ online.

Students, faculty and staff at campuses in the affected area should sign up for PSUTXT text-message alerts if they haven’t already, by visiting http://live.psu.edu/psutxt online. In the event of campus closures or delays, information will be distributed via PSUTXT text message, on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pennstate and on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/psutxt online. In an emergency situation, residents should call 911; damage or flooding in campus buildings should be directed to the campus’ OPP service desk.

The Counseling Youth at Risk program offers the latest research
and techniques for working with youth who are dealing with family,
addiction, depression or other issues

Of the 74 million children in the United States, one in six lives in
poverty, nearly a million suffer abuse or neglect, and one in 15 drops
out of school, according to a report from the Children's Defense Fund, a
nonprofit child advocacy organization. To equip the professionals who
help children and adolescents cope with the challenges they face, Penn
State is offering a certificate program at multiple campuses throughout
Pennsylvania starting this fall.

"Today's youth are under tremendous pressures and need more help at a
time when budgets are being cut and fewer services are available for
children and their families," said Richard Hazler, professor of
counselor education and head of the Counseling Youth at Risk program. "You can't pick up a newspaper or watch a newscast without learning about an issue affecting youth."

The 15-credit certificate program is designed for professionals,
including school counselors, social workers, marriage and family
therapists, psychologists and educators who work with at-risk youth, as
well as for those interested in changing careers. The College of
Education is offering the program through the Penn State Video Learning
Network at these locations: Penn State DuBois, Fayette, Greater
Allegheny, Hazleton, Lehigh Valley, Schuylkill, University Park and York
campuses and the Learning Center in Lewistown. Courses will originate
at University Park campus and be transmitted to the other locations
every other Tuesday evening for eight weeks and also will include online
activities.

"The program will give participants a greater understanding of the
difficulties children face," Hazler said. "Participants will learn
techniques, emerging research, and resources they can use to help
children." Course work can be used to meet professional continuing
education requirements, including Pennsylvania Act 48 requirements for
educators.

Trustees approve 3.8 percent composite tuition increase

Center Valley, Pa. -- Penn State's Board of Trustees approved a
composite tuition increase of 3.8 percent for undergraduate students for
the 2011-12 academic year at their meeting today (July 15) at Penn
State Lehigh Valley.

"Two-thirds of our undergraduate students will see increases of
between 2.9 percent and 3.5 percent," said Penn State President Graham
B. Spanier. "As we said from the beginning, we are determined that our
students and their families will not bear the full burden of the
appropriation cuts."

Tuition for lower division Pennsylvania resident and non-resident
students at Commonwealth campuses will increase by 2.9 percent. Tuition
for lower division non-resident students at University Park will
increase by 3.5 percent, and resident students at University Park will
see an increase of 4.9 percent.

Translated into dollars, in-state lower-division students will see a
tuition increase per semester of $356 at University Park and $175 at
most of the Commonwealth campuses. Non-resident lower-division students
will see a tuition increase per semester of $465 at University Park and
$267 at most of the Commonwealth campuses.

To offset the recently announced $68 million cut in the University's
state appropriation, Penn State has been implementing both
across-the-board and targeted cuts through the efforts of the Core
Council and elsewhere, seeking efficiencies while maintaining the
quality of a Penn State education. Over the past three months, those
cuts and internal savings have totaled nearly $30 million.

The University generated additional savings through changes to health
care benefits, energy savings, cuts to funding for capital
improvements, savings on property and liability insurance and cut backs
on funds aimed at new programs. The elimination of a salary increase for
faculty and staff this summer also generated significant savings, as
did a targeted early-retirement offering, and academic program cuts,
consolidations and mergers recommended by the Core Council, a group
charged with identifying millions of dollars in savings since 2010.

"This certainly has been a challenging year," Spanier said. "We
understand that even a moderate tuition increase has an impact on our
students and their families. The cost-cutting measures we're taking
involve significant sacrifice on the part of the University community as
a whole, but they're being done with the goal of allowing students to
continue to pursue a Penn State education."

The Information Technology Fee will increase $4 per semester for
full-time undergraduate students, from $236 to $240. The Student
Activity Fee will increase between $3 and $4 for full-time undergraduate
students at most campuses, and the facilities fee will increase between

New Penn State Video Learning Network expands to 16 campuses

By July, 16 Penn State campuses will have new high-technology
classrooms equipped with identical high-definition video conferencing
technologies that will enable faculty and students in up to four
locations to participate in the same course at the same time. The
classrooms are part of Penn State's new Video Learning Network (VLN).
The goal of this network is to help Pennsylvania adults acquire the
knowledge and skills they need for today's jobs -- which often require
college degrees or specialized training -- conveniently at a Penn State
campus close to home.

A VLN team is assessing career development opportunities within
Pennsylvania. "We are pulling together data on long-term employment
opportunities throughout the Commonwealth, the Penn State academic
programs that will prepare Pennsylvania adult learners for these
careers, and the campuses that have VLN classrooms to offer the
programming most needed in their area," said Rosemarie Piccioni, who
recently was appointed director of the Penn State Video Learning
Network. She said a new report indicates there is employment growth in
the health care, business, finance, engineering, nursing and education
sectors.

Piccioni is responsible for overseeing the installation of VLN
classrooms at Penn State campuses. She added, "The teaching and learning
technologies available to faculty through the VLN classrooms are making
it easier for them to reach students in multiple locations
simultaneously in ways that meet the different learning styles of
learners."

This summer, professional certificate programs and general education
courses are being offering at many Penn State campuses through the VLN
in accelerated seven-week formats. In the fall, a wider range of general
education courses and certificate programs will be available. Starting
in fall 2012, the first bachelor's degree programs will be offered.

The Video Learning Network includes the following Penn State
locations: Berks, DuBois, Behrend, Fayette, Great Valley, Greater
Allegheny, Harrisburg, Hazleton, the Learning Center in Lewistown,
Lehigh Valley, Mont Alto, New Kensington, Schuylkill, University Park,
the Williamsport Center, and York.

Penn State Outreach
serves more than 5 million people each year, delivering more than 2,000
programs to people in all 67 Pennsylvania counties, all 50 states and
114 countries worldwide.

We have all heard the slogan in regards to not
drinking and driving, but did you know that texting and driving is just as
serious? According to the National Safety Council, approximately 23 percent of
all crashes – or 1.2 million crashes – each year are caused by drivers using
their handheld or hands-free cell phones and texting while driving. This is much
greater than the number of crashes caused by any other distraction

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness month. Join us in discussing
the effects of texting and driving and what you can do right now to save your
life as well as someone else's life. The presentation is on April 13,
Wednesday, from 6:30-7:30 pm in the conference room of the C-building. Shown will be
some hard-hitting videos and Carol Alonge, from The PA Highway Safety
Patrol, will be there to discuss the dangers of driving while you are texting,
talking, or e-mailing on your phone. All are

Shroud Encounter will be coming to Penn State University—Schuykill Campus on Wednesday, April 20th, at 7:00 PM. This highly acclaimed 90-minute multi-media presentation will be held at the Morgan Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.

Shroud Encounter is a production of Shroud of Turin Education Project, Inc. and will be presented by renowned international expert Russ Breault. The presentation is a fast moving, big-screen experience using over 150 images covering all aspects of Shroud research.

Mr. Breault has been featured in several national documentaries including "Mysteries of the Ancient World" on CBS and most recently "The Real Face of Jesus?" on the History Channel. He has presented at numerous colleges and universities including Duke, West Point, Auburn and many others. See ShroudEncounter.com for more information.

The Shroud of Turin is the most analyzed artifact in the world yet remains a mystery. The 14-foot long linen cloth that has been in Turin, Italy for over 400 years and bears the faint front and back image of a 5'10" bearded, crucified man with apparent wounds and bloodstains that match the crucifixion account as recorded in the Bible. Millions of people over the centuries have believed it be the actual burial shroud of Jesus. The historical trail tracks back through Italy, France, Asia Minor (Turkey) and may have originated in the Middle East according to botanical evidence.

A team of 40 scientists in 1981 concluded it was not the work of an artist. They found no visible trace of paint, pigment, dye or other artistic substances on the cloth. Other discoveries have defied explanation such as why the image shows up as a positive image in a photographic negative. The image also contains 3-D or distance information indicating the cloth must have wrapped a human form at the time the image was created. The blood is AB positive with human DNA. Skeptics have mounted numerous attempts to show how a medieval artist could have produced the image but all have been inadequate to fully explain how the mysterious image was formed. The image is so superficial it only penetrates the top micro-fibers to the depth of a single bacterium. In addition, there is no image under the blood meaning that the blood was on the cloth before the image. No attempt at replicating the image has resolved these two key attributes. If the cloth indeed wrapped a corpse, there are no stains of decomposition.

The Shroud was largely dismissed in 1988 when three carbon dating labs indicated a medieval origin. However chemical research published in a peer reviewed scientific journal in 2005 shows that the single sample cut from the outside corner edge was not part of the original Shroud material. In violation of the sampling protocol, only one sample was used for dating and was cut from the most handled area of the cloth, an area that should have been avoided. The sample appears to have been part of a section that was frayed and repaired sometime during the Middle Ages. Based on this new evidence, many scientists now believe the carbon dating result is inconclusive and should no longer be considered valid.

Adding strength to the Shroud's authenticity, scientists from Hebrew University confirmed the presence of pollen from plants that grow only in Israel. The mystery continues. National Geographic called it "One of the most perplexing enigmas of modern times."

Shroud Encounter will cover all aspects of the history, science, art and theories of how the image may have been formed.
Penn State Schuylkill will be holding graduation on Saturday, May 14,
2011 at 10:00 am on the Campus Green. John Hillkirk, the Editor at USA TODAY will be the keynote Speaker. In case of inclement weather the commencement ceremonies will be held in the gymnasium.

John
Hillkirk, the Editor at USA TODAY, has been a writer and editor at USA TODAY
since the newspaper was founded in 1982.
Before being named to his current position in April 2009, John was executive
editor for five years and managing editor of USA TODAY's Money section for nine
years.

During his tenure as Editor and
Executive Editor, USA TODAY has won multiple national journalism awards
including the George Polk Award, the $75,000 Grantham Prize for Environmental
Reporting; the Cabot Medal and the Scripps-Howard National Journalism Award. Under
Hillkirk's leadership, USA TODAY developed the Number 1 media app for the Apple
iPad, with more than 1.5 million downloads, and recently won the Mobi Award for
the best mobile app for editorial content. Over the past year, USATODAY.com's audience has grown
nearly 20% and the website experienced the largest dot.com readership gains of
the three national newspapers (USA TODAY, The Wall Street Journal and The New
York Times) according to MRI's Spring 2010 analysis. USA TODAY remains the
nation's No. 1 newspaper with 1.8 million copies sold daily. When Hillkirk
was running the Money section, he was named "Executive Editor" of The
Journal of Financial Reporting's "Blue-Chip Newsroom," an all-star
team of the nation's best business journalists selected from ballots mailed to
150 business editors, writers, TV anchors, reporters and producers. "Mr.
Hillkirk occupies the top spot (in) recognition of his splendid work in
elevating USA TODAY's 'Money' pages into a place among, or at least near, the
nation's elite," wrote Bruce Goldberg, TJFR's managing editor in
announcing the Blue-Chip team.

In 2009 and
2010, Hillkirk judged the Pulitzer Prizes over two days at Columbia University.
Hillkirk has also served as a final judge of the Gerald Loeb Award,
administered by the UCLA Anderson School of Management, since 2002 and has judged
the Society of American Business Editors and Writers annual prizes as well.

Over the
past two decades, Hillkirk has co-authored three books. "Xerox: American
Samurai" was published in 1986 and was chosen as one of Business Week's 10 best books of the
year. "Grit, Guts and Genius: True tales of Megasuccess," was
published in 1990. Both books were co-authored by Gary Jacobson of the Dallas Morning News. In 1991, Hillkirk co-authored
a management book with former Ford CEO Donald E. Petersen entitled "A
Better Idea: Redefining the Way Americans Work."

While
at USA TODAY, Hillkirk led interdepartmental teams that won the Gannett Corporation's
IDEAS contest (for the Market Trends page in 2003; the Internet Stock Index in
2000 and Ad Track in 2005) and the USA TODAY Luminary Award in 2003 (for the
Money/Advertising improvement team); 2002 (Market Trends) and 1995 (for Ad
Track).

Prior to
joining the nation’s newspaper, Hillkirk was a technology reporter at the
Times-Union in Rochester, NY, and a business reporter at the Valley News
Dispatch in Tarentum, Pa. He graduated from Allegheny College in 1978 and was
awarded an honorary doctorate degree when he presented the college's

Penn State Schuylkill Chef Penny Shade was awarded the 2011 Achieving
Women Award presented by the University's Commission for Women.

The Commission for Women Award is a University-wide recognition that
highlights the hard work of a technical service employee at Penn State.
Shade works in the campus's Hidden Stream Café, a food court that features a large menu of snacks and meals for students during the school week. She also oversees Schuylkill's catering service.

"Penny goes above and beyond to provide students and the community
here with incredible service," Penn State Hazleton and Schuylkill
Housing and Food Services Director Jonathan Kukta said.

Shade will be honored at a ceremony on Friday, April 15 at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel.
Kukta submitted the nomination and he said it wasn't difficult to find
campus members to write supporting testimonials on Shade's behalf.

"I was delighted to learn that Penny is being honored for her
achievements," Keith Hillkirk, Penn State Schuylkill chancellor, said.
"She provides outstanding customer service in our campus café and it's
essential that we recognize and celebrate excellence in the service and
leadership exemplified by employees like Penny."

Shade said she was equally excited and surprised about winning the
award. She added that "it's an honor to be highly respected and
appreciated by my peers."
Shade's culinary life doesn't stop at the Hidden Stream Café. After
work, she takes culinary arts classes at Pennsylvania College of
Technology in Williamsport. Additionally, she also substitute teaches
culinary classes at Northumberland Vo Tech in Shamokin.

"I love putting on my chef coat every day," she said. "There's just
an endless amount of neat stuff you can do with food. If I can be a
chef, I can smile."
Kukta said Shade brings a wealth of knowledge to the kitchen that is something the staff and students benefit from every day.

"Penny continuously displays the 'wow' factor to our students,
faculty and staff," he said. "What makes Penny stand out is her
student-centered approach in particular."

Penn State Schuylkill's Nittany Players are preparing to perform "The Wiz," April 14 through 17
in the John E. Morgan Auditorium.

"The Wiz" is a children's show, something that people of all ages could enjoy. "The Wiz" is a funky musical version of the L. Frank Baum story "The
Wonderful Wizard of Oz," telling the story of Dorothy, a Kansas farm girl, who
is lifted to the land of Oz by a tornado. She meets a few friends, including a
scarecrow, tin man and lion, as she follows the yellow brick road in search of
the wizard who will help her get home.

According to Cathy Fiorillo, Assistant Professor of Theatre and Speech and Theatre minor advisor at Penn State Schuylkill , Penn State Schuylkill is updating the show and making it its own.

Tickets are now on sale for "The Wiz". General Admission is $10, Children and Seniors $ 8.00 PSU Schuylkill Students are free.

the “Bunny Trial,” we welcome you to stay for the Volleyball Game. Last year this event was a really fun night
for both participants and supporters and we are hoping to see this

Registrar announcement made regarding policy changes

In the fall of 2010, the Office of the University Registrar
released new functionality for students and parents in eLion. With the consent
of their student, parents may view their student's course schedule and grades
via the eLion Parent/Other menu. Set-up is simple and instructions were
included in announcements which were shared widely in September.

Since this functionality is now available, effective
immediately, the Office of the University Registrar, with concurrence of the
President's Council, is discontinuing its option allowing parents to submit a
copy of their most recent IRS form 1040 in order to prove dependency. The forms
we currently have on file we will "grandfather." Parents who want to
see their student's grades will need to work with their student for access to
grades through eLion Parent.

Instructions for set up can be found on the Registrar's
Web site. Once access has been granted by the student, the parent may long
into eLion as Parent/Other, and select Grades.

The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT), Central Pennsylvania
Section will hold its spring workshop at Penn State Schuylkill on Friday, March
11. This workshop will be a sharing of methods and ideas for physics or physical
science teachers of all experience levels. It will focus on how we can use the
idea of an engineering project to learn basic physics concepts.

The workshop will open with a keynote address by Judge John E. Jones III,
United States district justice of the Middle District of Pennsylvania. In 2005,
Jones presided over the landmark case of Kitzmiller v. Dover School District,
after which he held that it was unconstitutional to teach intelligent design
within a public school science curriculum in what has come to be known as the
Dover Decision.

Jones will present "From Scopes to Kitzmiller: The Legal Battle Regarding
Teaching Evolution in Public Schools." His talk will trace the legal cases
starting with the Scopes trial in Tennessee up to today, including Kitzmiller,
and highlight the reasons for the jurisprudential progression. His presentation
also will highlight matters related to the Supreme Court and the Establishment
Clause in the First Amendment.

The public is invited to hear Jones’ keynote
address, which will be held at 8 p.m. in the Morgan Auditorium in the Student

Feb. 22 marked the date that Penn State was founded in 1855 as a publicly
supported agricultural college. In 1863, Penn State was designated as
Pennsylvania’s land-grant college -- a distinction that only Penn State holds
and a designation that created a university to educate large segments of society
that had not yet been served by higher education. To underscore Penn State’s
important relationship with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Penn State
Outreach has created a video that
highlights the many successes of the University and the individuals whose lives
have been touched by Penn State.

As one of the nation’s first land-grant institutions, Penn State has been in
a partnership with Pennsylvania for nearly 150 years. Through this partnership,
Penn State has provided both access to education and expertise to help solve
some of society’s most pressing problems.

“It’s a designation that meant Penn State would work to improve the
well-being of farmers and industrial workers,” said Penn State President Graham
Spanier. “It meant that Penn State was one of the ‘people’s universities,’
created to make a difference in the lives of citizens.”

Today, Penn State plays a significant role in education, research and service
that supports the development of the Commonwealth and its residents.

“Penn State is proud of its partnership with Pennsylvania and remains
committed to the Commonwealth as we move forward in the 21st Century,” said
Spanier.

Penn State to conduct test of PSUTXT system February 23rd

Just as the Emergency Broadcast System periodically runs tests on radio
and television stations, Penn State plans to test the PSUTXT
text-messaging system to help ensure its functionality in a true
emergency. At 1 p.m. on Feb. 23, PSUTXT administrators from each campus
will log into the system and send a message that will be marked clearly
as a test.

"Testing the system like this does a number of things," explained
Annemarie Mountz, assistant director of Public Information. "While many
Penn State campuses have had to send PSUTXT messages to announce class
delays and cancellations this winter, others have not used the system in
quite a while. This test will give PSUTXT administrators at all
campuses the opportunity to review the procedures for sending a message.
It also has benefits for subscribers and those who believe they are
subscribed but never validated their subscriptions."

There are a number of subscriptions in the system that remain
unvalidated. "These people have not yet successfully completed the
validation process, so they are not set up to receive PSUTXT messages
although they may think they are. This test will help to make those
people aware that their PSUTXT accounts are not active and they need to
complete their subscription validations," Mountz said.

Validation is necessary for subscriptions to become active to ensure
that those receiving the messages actually want them and that nobody has
subscribed them without their knowledge. It also confirms that the cell
phone number and carrier information was entered correctly so messages
can be delivered to the subscriber.

This particular test will involve having PSUTXT administrators from
23 Penn State campuses log into the server simultaneously and send SMS
and e-mail messages to nearly 90,000 subscribers, putting as much strain
on the vendor's servers as possible to test their ability to handle the
load. The vendor, e2Campus, also will be able to use the results of the
test to check for any problems with connections to cell providers.

"Text message aggregators in general experienced some issues with a
connectivity to carriers such as Verizon Wireless in recent weeks. This
test will help confirm that the carrier bind connectivity is working
properly," said Eric Polovich of e2Campus.

Those who receive the test message on Feb. 23 do not need to take any
action. Anyone who initiated a subscription to PSUTXT but does not
receive the test message on Feb. 23 should log into the PSUTXT system by
going to http://live.psu.edu/psutxt
online. Penn State students, faculty and staff should click on the
WebAccess link near the top of that page to login or to create an
account using their Penn State access account ID and password. Anyone
without a Penn State access account should login or create an account at
http://live.psu.edu/psutxt online.

"Once logged in, they should update their cell phone information, and
then click on 'Services' to have a new validation code sent," said
Mountz. "Once they receive the validation code, they need to enter it on
the registration page on the Web site to complete the process and
validate their accounts."

Subscribers who continue to have difficulty validating their account should visit http://omnilertsupport.com/e2campus/ online.
